Clean Make-up Swap

Clean Make-up Swap

Since I began learning about potential harm caused by certain ingredients in 2012, I have made many changes to what I consume in all areas of my life. Food we buy, cleaning products and of course skincare. One area I have not paid much attention to is makeup. As I am not a huge makeup person and most days do not even apply much I just did not pay much attention to it. After learning more about some of the potential harm caused by certain ingredients in makeup, I decided it was time to take a closer look. And of course I want to share what I am learning.

Ingredient to Avoid

TALC- After learning more about talc powder I was shocked to learn that many products containing talc have also been contaminated with asbestos. Talc is a common ingredient in makeup, it is used in powder based products such eye shadows and blush.

Talc has been known to be contaminated with asbestos which is a known carcinogen. According to the FDA website regarding talc:

"Asbestos is also a naturally occurring silicate mineral, but with a different crystal structure. Both talc and asbestos are naturally occurring minerals that may be found in close proximity in the earth. Unlike talc, however, asbestos is a known carcinogen when inhaled. There is the potential for contamination of talc with asbestos and therefore, it is important to select talc mining sites carefully and take steps to test the ore sufficiently."

You can check out The Mesothelioma Center at Asbestos.com to learn so much more about this topic. They are a resource to help us understand why it's important to use talc-free and asbestos-free make-up. This article here even recommends talc-free make-up brands.

Testing for asbestos can be difficult and not always accurate and can sneak into some makeup. All this to say, personally I have decided to purchase talc-free makeup. Lucky for me it was time to re-vamp my makeup and I am looking for new makeup. I will share what I bought and what I think of it all in a future post!

Tell me in the comments, have you tried a clean makeup brand you love? Which one?
