Breaking Down SPF! How to Protect Your Skin☀️

Breaking Down SPF! How to Protect Your Skin☀️

In all my years of educating clients AND skincare professionals, the topic of SPF has been one of the most popular to cover. Mainly because there is a lot of confusion around SPF, like how to use it and the best way to keep your skin protected.

Let's discuss WHY we should be wearing SPF, how much we need and other misconceptions I have heard over the years.

  1. First of all, sun protection factor or SPF is the number 1 product to help prevent damage, fine lines and wrinkles and every other concern we try to avoid. The bottom line, damage is easier to prevent than to repair so keep that in mind when you go out into the sun.
  2. Too much sun exposure can lead to skin cancer. Of course, this is something we want to avoid at all costs. It is recommended to get a yearly skin check with your dermatologist.
  3. The Sun is a great way to receive vitamin D. You can still receive those benefits on the body while protecting the skin on your face.

When our skin becomes darker from sun exposure, this is actually a response from our skin cells trying to protect us. Pigment is produced causing the skin to get darker or BURN if the skin is fair.

Over time as cells are damaged, problems like permanent dark spots or pigmentation, wrinkles and loss of elasticity occurs. And unfortunately in some cases skin cancer.

What can we do to protect our skin?

ANTIOXIDANTS help boost SPF efficacy. Use your serums with Vitamin C and other antioxidants as these ingredients help protect your skin cells.

What Level of SPF should you use?

I like to recommend at least 15 SPF but prefer 30. After SPF of 30, your level of protection doesn't go up too much but the chemical load can go up.

How much should I use?

Don't forget the TWO finger rule for the face and neck. Many experts suggest a shot glass amount for the body.

AND if you are out in the sun, you need to re-apply your SPF. I like to wear a hat as well!

Vitamin C and SPF are best friends! Use BOOST vitamin C complex with your daily SPF and you will be even more protected.

RENEW watermelon mask is here!🍉

RENEW watermelon mask is here!🍉

Covid really changed a lot of my clients skin and not for the better. The constant mask wearing, the stress at an all time high, it really took a toll on my clients skin.

Many reached out to me for a solution. With spa services shut down more and more people were interested in treating their skin at home. And with all of this feedback we decided to put together an at-home experience.

We knew we wanted to create a kit to help with increased break-outs and unbalanced skin.

Our TREATMENT kit was launched and included a brand new mask only available in this kit. The feedback was incredible! Many of my clients asked for this product to be created in a stand alone large size and we listened!

We are happy to announce the launch of our 'oh so popular' clay based mask RENEW watermelon mask!

  • Helps absorb oil in the skin
  • Slightly exfoliating
  • Brightening

*Our RENEW mask is a powder mask that is activated with water or REPAIR toner. It comes with a mask brush and scoop to mix and apply like a spa professional!

We suggest using this mask 1-2 times a week for the best results.

Have you tried our RENEW watermelon mask? Let us know in the comments below what you think!

Answering ALL of Your Questions about Masking!

Answering ALL of Your Questions about Masking!

Getting our basic regimen is always the most important step in curating an effective skin care routine. We consider the basics the following:

1. Cleanser 2. Toner 3. Treatment 4.Hydration/Moisturizer and 5. SPF

When you are brand new to treating your skin keeping it simple is a great idea until it becomes a routine. For my clients who can barely remember to wash their face at night I like them to start small and then build.

At this point I like to step it up a notch and add in our weekly treatment products that really make a big difference in the health of the skin! One of the products that is considered a weekly product is a mask.

Picking the perfect mask always depends on what your skin type is. What are your concerns? What does your skin need? Answering these questions first will ensure the best product and results. So let's talk about the questions you may have!

Oily/ Acne Prone/ Combination Skin Type

  • Clay based mask, mud and gel

Dry/ Dehydrated

  • Cream based mask, *Although the RENEW watermelon Mask works well with dry skin due to the watermelon extract

Most masks recommend 1-3 times a week. Masks are not everyday products.

I get this! Making time to apply a mask for 10 or 15 minutes may seem like a luxury you don't  have time for. I like to incorporate it into a weekly nighttime ritual and plan for it. My favorite way to enjoy a mask is to use it while taking a bath and listening to my favorite podcast or meditations. I feel relaxed afterwards, my skin looks and feels amazing and I consider it self care time that I cherish.

We would love to hear from you! Do you use a mask regularly on your skin? How many times a week?

SkinCare Basics! Most FAQ Edition!

SkinCare Basics! Most FAQ Edition!

Today I am covering skincare 101! Over the years these questions pop up the most and I want to break this down to make it easy to understand!

In What Order Do I Apply Products?

The easy way to remember this is lightest weight to heaviest. Think of products like serums getting deeper than a product like an SPF where we want it to stay on the surface.

For SIMPLY JESS products apply in the following order:

  • REPAIR toner
  • BOOST vitamin c complex
  • UNDO serum
  • REBOOT restorative oil
  • GUA SHA tool (this should be used with cleansed skin and an oil)

For Products For Weekly Use-like Exfoliation and Masks:

  1. Use on cleansed skin
  2. Apply Exfoliation and THEN do you masking
  3. Make sure to follow the product directions for how often to use and how long to wear.
  4. SPF is especially important after exfoliating even it you exfoliate at night.

SO How Much should I use?

Serums- use 2-3 Pumps for the face, neck and décolleté.

REBOOT- About 10 drops for the face, neck and décolleté.

REPAIR toner- Spray 3-5 times

Skincare Regimen by Skin Type!

Our Skincare products can be totally customized by skin type, PREFERENCE, and conditions.

When I say preference, I mean you could be oily AND still like an oil for example.

  • Dull skin/pigmentation - REPAIR toner, BOOST vitamin c complex, REBOOT restorative oil
  • Acne prone/Oily skin-TREATMENT kit at home facial, BOOST vitamin c complex
  • Sensitive/RED/Dry- REPAIR toner, UNDO serum, REBOOT oil

*If you have a skin concern we have not mentioned please leave a comment below and I will address this!

I hope this post helps break down skincare products and application. Skincare doesn't have to be complicated to achieve amazing results! We hope this helps!

Beauty Trends in 2021!

Beauty Trends in 2021!

I have been doing some research about some of the hottest beauty trends this year and I am so happy to report I am on board with this years hot trends!

I thought I would share what is trending this year and how it aligns with Simply Jess, our practices and values!

Below I will highlight a trend and then recommend a treatment or product that helps you get each result!

  • DEWY Skin - Have plumped up hydrated skin is my favorite skin look! A dewy skin is a moisturized and healthy skin.

Our secret weapon for DEWY skin is our UNDO serum with Hyaluronic Acid. HA helps bind moisture to the skin and helps achieve that glowing skin that is so beautiful and healthy.

  • CLEAN Skincare- This is what Simply Jess skincare is all about! From day 1 we have used all natural, non-toxic skincare to achieve results. We take the complications out of skincare while keeping it pure and natural at the same time.

Every product is derived using all natural ingredients. You can feel good about using each and every one.

  • 'MASKNE' Products- Due to Covid, our daily lives include wearing a mask, for some all day in their job and others here and there like going to the store. Using a mask can definitely add to problematic skin such as breakouts and irritation. Addressing this problem is very on brand for 2021

Our TREATMENT at home facial kit is the perfect way to treat 'maskne' while giving your skin a pampering facial at home. Not only does it promote clearer skin but also self-care.

  • NATURAL looking makeup- Maybe its because our social activities have been on hold or limited but a light looking makeup trend is one I am here for!

While we don't have makeup in our line, we do have REPAIR toner! This is the perfect solution to a CLEAN makeup setting spray that is not just a setting spray but is loaded with antioxidants to help hydrate and soothe the skin. From redness, to dryness, this toner spritzed on top of makeup helps it last longer and give you that beautiful glow.

Are there any beauty trends we have missed? Share below some of the beauty trends you are loving this year!

Top Tips for Oily Skin Types!

Top Tips for Oily Skin Types!

Having oily skin can be a challenge. Makeup doesn't stay on properly, I've heard clients describe it as makeup sliding off. Also breakouts and clogged pores can be an issue with oily skin.

A few things to note about oily skin:

  • Oily Skin is a Skin TYPE- although there are things we can do to manage the oil, it is genetic.
  • Hormones and our age play a roll in how much oil our skin produces.

So what can we do about this?

    1. Avoid harsh/drying products- its seems like a great idea! Because yes, it works, but only for a while. Soon the skin will start to overproduce oil and you'll have dehydration as well.
    2. Using hydrating products- this doesn't sound like an important step for oily skin! However oily skin needs hydration (water) to keep the skin barrier healthy.
    3. Regular Exfoliation-This is key to help the skin stay balanced and keeping the oil in check.
    4. Many people have to use blotting papers to help manage the huge amount of oil that is produced throughout the day.

Favorite Products for OILY SKIN

REPAIR toner-

A toner makes a world of difference when treating oily skin! I like to use a cotton pad with REPAIR toner after removing makeup.

RENEW watermelon mask
This clay based mask is amazing for drawing out impurities and balancing oil in the skin. It also has an exfoliating effect making it dual acting.
BOOST vitamin c complex
Vitamin c has help promote cellular turnover and encourage balance. One of our favorite ingredients niacinamide helps with oil reduction, pore size and acne, a win win!
The most amazing part of having oily skin? Younger looking skin! People with oily skin tend to show less wrinkles and visible signs of aging, so thats a major plus!

Makeup and Skin- Tips for Glowing Skin!

Makeup and Skin- Tips for Glowing Skin!

I began my career in beauty in the cosmetics world. I worked for Chanel cosmetics and Prescriptives (*anyone remember that brand??).

I quickly learned I was much more interested in how we treat the skin under the makeup than the makeup!

When I was working in cosmetics we were concerned with covering up, applying heavy makeup and had little thought to what we used underneath. The cosmetic skin care we sold was heavily fragranced and had artificial coloring. Many of my clients were having terrible breakouts and reactions.

After getting into professional skincare, I learned that we can treat the skin and keep it healthy. That is the first step in helping our makeup look its best!

Today we are going to talk about

  1. what helps our makeup look its best
  2. tricks to prevent breakouts with makeup use
  3. what skin care products work best with makeup application

Our makeup looks the best when we have hydrated skin without dry patches. The key to this is using hydrating products to help smooth and nourish the skin.

UNDO serum

  • Hyaluronic Acid helps deeply hydrate and plump out fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Smoothes the skin and helps foundation application look amazing.
  • Anti-inflammatory ingredients soothe and minimize redness
REBOOT restorative oil
  • Gives the skin a glowy appearance and looks beautiful under makeup.
  • Rosehip seed oil helps brighten the skin tone
  • Medium weight formula is not too heavy underneath foundation or powder.

Washing your skin:

  1. Skin doesn't need to breathe, this is a myth. Not wearing makeup for this reason isn't necessary, but making sure you wash it off at the end of the day is!
  2. It's best to use a cleanser to remove makeup and not a facial cleansing wipe. Although it won't hurt once in a while,  it just doesn't fully remove makeup. We don't want to leave any makeup on the skin that could cause clogged pores or breakouts.
  3. Washing your skin before you apply your nightly serums helps you get the most out of your products. If you have a hard time right before bed getting washing your skin, try washing it in the evening before you get too tired.

Makeup brushes

Don't forget to wash your makeup brushes to avoid problems such as clogged pores on the skin.

Best practices are a once a week deep clean and some recommend a spray to clean them after each use. This is especially helpful if you are acne prone.

SPF in Makeup, is this enough protection?

While I love the idea of wearing a foundation with an SPF, it is NOT enough protection. Using your SPF under makeup will ensure you are protected and if your makeup has a SPF too, even better!

After Makeup is applied use REPAIR toner to set it!

 Setting your makeup ensures:

  • Longer lasting application
  • Hydrated looking skin
  • Extra protection from the environment

I hope these tips and tricks when it comes to helping your makeup application look its best are helpful! Let me know if you still have questions!

Vitamin C, the Ultimate Super Hero Ingredient!

Vitamin C, the Ultimate Super Hero Ingredient!

Vitamin C is a tried and true ingredient we LOVE in the skincare world! We are going to discuss why we love it, who it's for and how to use it! Let's go!

  • Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that helps protect AND repair damage from free radicals such as sun, pollution etc.
  • This ingredient helps inhibit melanin production in the skin, helping the prevent hyperpigmentation. While also help lighten and brighten damage.
  • Collagen Producer! With the help of vitamin c we can boost collagen production in the skin

What makes this Ingredient even more effective?

Combining vitamin c together with other antioxidants, especially VITAMIN E, boosts the overall efficacy of the product without adding irritation. Vitamin c does not have to be at a super high percentage to be effective and this can lead to irritation and sensitivity.

Who is Vitamin C for? Anyone with the following concerns:

  1. Aging Concerns
  2. Loss of Firmness
  3. Exposure to Sun
  4. Dull Looking Skin

How do we use it?

The more consistent we are with Vitamin c the better! For best results use a serum that can be used am and pm. Applying where you are exposed, face neck and chest.

Our BOOST vitamin C complex

Our complex is a hydrating complex filled with all natural ingredients. The most important piece of this product is our stable vitamin c along with our high level of  antioxidant ingredients. This combination works synergistically together to deliver great results!

I am loving your feedback with BOOST vitamin c! Please let me know if you have any questions or feedback about vitamin c, I am here to help!

Looking for a Firmer Neck?

Looking for a Firmer Neck?

I have had many clients reach out to me and wonder how they can improve the appearance of the neck area. Some notice that the skin on their neck is sagging, has lines or dark spots and want to know how to treat this area.

The skin on the neck is more delicate and thin than the skin on the face so it can become damaged more easily. Also a lot of clients I have worked with forget to bring their products down to the chest area leaving this delicate area untreated.

Many people are dealing with a new issue called "tech neck" where we see lines and sagging due to neck positioning while looking down at devices.

I am going to share tips on what to avoid and also actions we can take to keep our neck area looking its best!

What to AVOID:

  • Fragrance! Although we have been taught to spray our perfume on the neck area this is not recommended. Fragrance causes photosensitivity which is a reaction to sunlight. This can accelerate conditions like hyperpigmentation and collagen breakdown.
  • Not applying SPF to the neck. Using SPF on the face AND the neck/chest is important if you are exposed to sun. We want to treat the neck the same as we treat the face, that goes for your serums and oils too.
  • Not being aware of our posture Whether it's looking at a computer or phone, try to be aware of your positioning and notice if your neck is folded while looking down.

    1. My FAVORITE treatment is using the GUA SHA. Consistency with this amazing tool does wonders for the neck area. You can check out my instagram for a quick and easy tutorial!
    2. Ultrasound and lasers can be helpful if you want to look into professional treatments without being too invasive. Non invasive treatments such as these have been helpful in tightening the skin and promoting collagen production, firming the neck area.

What Products Will Help?

SPF! This is the number one product we need to use to help prevent collagen breakdown and pigmentation.

Hylauranic Acid- great for plumping up the fine lines and wrinkles

Niacinamide and Vitamin C- Niacinamide is wonderful for helping protect the skins barrier. Together with Vitamin C these ingredients are super for collagen production and firming.

I hope this helps for those of you who have reached out on this topic! If you haven't tried the Gua Sha I always recommend starting here because of how wonderful the result with no side effects.
